Assembling a mini Tesla coil

This post subject is the assemble and operation of a mini Tesla coil kit, which is supplied by a DC voltage between 9 and 30V.

How a mini Tesla coil works?

This model is known as mini Tesla coil 15-24V.

The mini coil’s schematics, it’s a modulator circuit, which combines an oscilation signal with an audio signal, which enters through J2. While J1 is the plug to connect to an external power source. Alternatively, can link the two wires to a power source on J3.

According to the manual in Chinese, this coil is the resonant with a frequency locking loop. By that, when a current is inducted on L2, circuit’s oscilation frequency is blocked on L2’s resonance frequency, with the function to keep the mini coil’s resonance. The audio signal’s voltage changes L1’s frequency, which resonates on L2, and then, sound is produced.

During the operation, transistors heat up too much, specially TIP42, that’s why it’s important to put heat dissipators before solding transistors.

Making the coil’s primary winding

To make L1 primary coil’s installation easier, first, wind the red wire in a cylindrical object. No part of L1 shall touch L2, the orange wire.

Mini Tesla coil demonstration

To have a good performance, I recommend to use a DC power source of 24V and 2A. This mini coil can light up neon lamps, fluorescent lamps and play musics from a cellphone or computer. The video below show the kit’s assemble and operation.
