Solar Butterfly, travel around the world with sustainable energy

On September 30th, Solar Butterfly arrived at Curitiba, a trailer moved by solar energy, whose final destiny is COP30.

About Solar Butterfly

It’s a trailer supplied only by solar energy, traveled more than 86,000 km and visited 43 countries on 4 continents. Its last trajectory is from Uruguay to Belém, Brazil, where will occur COP30, the United Nations Conference about Climate Change. Solar Butterfly arrived at Paraná Federal University (UFPR).

This project was conceived by Louis Palmer and developed by Lucerna University (HSLU), in Switzerland. The objective is to present sustainable and economically viable solutions in many schools and universities around the world.

The trailer has approximately 40m^{2} of solar panels, which open like a butterfly’s wings.

Solar panels on the trailer’s top are custom-made by a Chinese company. They are made of silicon and flexible, making them much lighter than conventional solar panels.
Retractable photovoltaic panels charge a Tesla electric car, which tows the trailer.
More solar panels to charge Solar Butterfly. Because the panels on the trailer’s top are not enough to supply the car. In total, it can generate energy to move 200km per day.

Most of the trailer’s inner walls are made of recycled PET bottles collected from the sea.

A vehicle powered by hydrogen from UFPR’s Eco Octano energy efficiency team.
These are microalgae, from which can produce biodiesel and biokerosene, fuel for aviation.
This is a project from UFPR, which involves producing hydrogen from aluminium cans. The hydrogen is then used in a fuel cell to charge an electric vehicle.
